Internal Medicine Clinic
The internal medicine clinic is a 102 bed department. The clinic predominantly cares for patients with acute cardiovascular and gastroenterological illnesses. The chief of internal medicine is accredited for the entire scope of general internal medicine with emphasis on the specialty of cardiology. The three main services of our clinic include:
  1. Emergency medical department
  2. Cardiology and intensive care unit
  3. Gastroenterology

Each of these services is headed by a specially qualified staff physician.


Emergency medical department
Supervising staff physician Dr. med. R. Beyer

In this department we treat patients with acute life threatening illnesses encompassing the entire spectrum of internal medicine, including:

  • Hypertensive emergency
  • Cardiac arrythmias
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Heart failure
  • Acute cor pulmonale
  • Pulmonary embolus
  • Severe bronchopulmonary diseases
  • Poisoning
  • Acute renal failure
  • Acute gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Metabolic decompensation
  • Sepsis and septic syndromes
  • Acute malfunction of water and electrolyte balance
  • Acute abdomen
  • Shock/ multi-organ failure
  • Unconsciousness of unknown etiology


Department of cardiology and intensive care medicine
Supervising staff physician Dr. med. Alex Gehring

This department covers diseases of the heart, circulatory system and the lungs, including:

  • Acute myocardial infarction
  • Cardiac arrhythmia
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Acute left and right heart failure
  • Shock of varying etiology
  • Mechanical ventilation in acute pulmonary failure
  • Acute hemoperfusion in renal failure or intoxication
  • Acute malfunction of hemostasis


Department of Gastroenterology

The therapeutic focus of this department lies in the care of gastrointestinal, liver, biliary and pancreatic disorders, including:

  • Esophageal diseases
  • Infectious gastroenterological illnesses
  • Ulcerative diseases of the stomach and duodenum
  • Postoperative gastric illness
  • Chronic inflammatory bowel disease
  • Acute and chronic hepatitis
  • Liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension
  • Metabolic disorders and storage diseases of the liver
  • Acute and chronic cholecystitis and cholangitis
  • Cholelithiasis, Choledocholithiasis
  • Acute and chronic pancreatitis
  • Acute gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Oncological diseases of the gastrointestinal tract including the liver, the biliary tract and the pancreas

  • Abdominal ultrasound

  • 24 hour arrhythmia monitoring
  • 24 hour invasive and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring
  • 24 hour ventilation frequency and temperature monitoring
  • EKG

  • Pulmonary artery catheter
  • Pulmonary function testing (spirometry)
  • Diagnostic bronchoscopy

Cardiology and intensive care medicine

  • Left heart catheterisation
  • Right heart catheterisation (including under stress)
  • EKG
  • Ergometry with defined stress level
  • Cardiac and vascular ultrasound
  • Stress echocardiography
  • Invasive and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring
  • Heart frequency and temperature monitoring
  • 24 hour EKG

Gastroenterology

  • Esophageal-, gastro- and duodenoscopy
  • Rectosigmoidoscopy
  • Complete colonoscopy including ileoscopy
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP
  • Diagnostic bronchoscopy
  • Abdominal ultrasound with power-doppler sonography and 3-D imaging
  • Ultrasound controlled fine needle biopsy or punch biopsy of the liver, pancreas and retroperitoneum
  • Thyroid ultrasound and fine needle biopsy

Emergency medicine

20 beds with monitoring including 5 beds with ventilation possibility.

  • Hemoperfusion in intoxication and acute renal failure
  • Complete spectrum of intensive care medicine including parenteral nutrition or tube feeding
  • Temporary pacemaker treatment
  • Cardioversion and defibrillation

Cardiology and intensive care medicine

  • Acute PTCA in myocardial infarction (24 hours on call)
  • Fibinolysis in acute pulmonary embolism
  • Coronary artery dilation and stenting
  • Cardioversion and overdrive
  • Temporary transvenous pacemaker
  • Hemoperfusion in acute renal failure and intoxication
  • Respirator therapy in acute pulmonary failure

Gastroenterology

  • Hemostatic techniques for the entire gastrointestinal tract including injection, sclerotherapy, hemoclips and banding ligation
  • Treatment of cardia- and fundusvaricosis with cyanoacrylic tissue adhesive
  • Elective ligationtherapy of esophageal varicosis
  • Polypectomy
  • Endoscopic foreign body extraction
  • Endoscopic lithotripsy and extraction of biliary calculi
  • Endoscopic implantation of biliary endoprostheses
  • Placement of PEG-tubes for nutrition
